It not not only violates the 4th Amendment, it violates the UN's laws which provides Human Rights policy, which the US has not signed in it's intirity. AS well as our freedom of speech. Quite frankly all it's really about is covering the governments butt for all their lies, half truths, and to keep themselves from being caught with their pants down. It's for their protection not ours.

It seems anti terrorist laws are also useful against all sorts of political opposition.
Much of the Patriot Act was written as a 'wish list' during the Reagan Era to control any Communist sympathy in the Cold War. After 9/11 the same people were back in power (or now at the top of the CIA where they had once been desk officers) and they pulled their wish-lists out and got them passed, in a very incomprehensible bill issued only a few hours before it was voted on.
Today the Patriot Act is used against Puerto Rican independistas, Cuban sympathisers, black activists and indigenous rights leaders more than it is used against terrorists. It also sees frequent use against anyone of Middle Eastern origin who may be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Similar things have been possible in Britain for many years now, but the difference in the US seems to be once an agency is given a certain power it does not consider the effects on liberty of any applications of that power.

no, since they are still getting a search warrant based on probable cause.
And we have had a secret court for warrants for wire taps for some time now.
