The Americans used unorthadox tactics..hiding from the tree, etc. the British expected a real army to face them in the open. So the English considered the Americans as unlawful combatants and would execute them when they caught them.

The movie was correct in that aspect.

It generally showed some of what really happened for example the main character and many people of the time weren't sure self government would be an improvement.

The villian of the movie was a real person, and did slaughter american troops who had surrendered. But unlike the movie the real Tarlton survived the war.

The final battle was a movie version of the battle of Cow pens where the American troops actually defeated the British Army. But most of the fighting was done by regular troops. The militia was used as bait to cause the british to break formation and attack headlong into the American regulars that cut them to pieces with standard for the day, volley of musket fire.

Also shown in the movie and true is the end where the british general fired artillery on his own troops and the Americans which were mixed on the battle field.

I found the movie hard to follow on chronology. Other than the final battle which did lead to the defeat at Yorktown.
