Because Canada is under the control of the United Kingdom. UK's monarch in this case a King, who is their commander and chief told them to do it. Back in those days Canada had less independence than they do now. They used to be the Dominion of Canada. Canada still has a governor general who is the Queen's representative.

Plus the Canadians thought that hockey might be threatened by the Germans.

i think canada had a great part in both ww's if u think in the 2nd world war the canadians fought the atlantic war almost losing all the soldier because of the unter sea ( which is submarines ) of the german which could hear the sound of the merchant ships and fire away a missile hitting and killing canadian germans had thousands of people and canadians had hundreds big difference and we manage to out rule them and take over the atlantic sea which allowed us to get to britain to bring our food and supply and clothing because they wher scares on food and since the boats were being demolished they were lucky to get food and we helped to get through the french canal which was taking over by germans

Maybe because they dont want any trouble with countries, and if we (canada) ever got in any sticky situations we would have help. (if we declined their plea for help they would decline ours if we ever needed it). And canada, as a nation, is just kind like that.
