Alex B, I go to Illinois quite frequently (about once every month or so) and in my opinion it seems that your question runs along the lines of trespassing. If someone trespasses onto another persons property the they have the right to defend themselves. So it would seem that if someone crossed into your yard to tp your house then you probably would have the right to shoot them with an air soft gun, because you are defending yourself.

Like they are saying....a person usually has to be a threat. Also the rule of law in many States says that you have to wait until the person actually breaks into your home and try's to attack you before you have the go ahead to fire your weapon at them.
Reason being is because someone might be drunk and unknowingly be banging on the wrong persons door. Or the people toilet papering your house may have the wrong address. Harmless error.
However, you may be able to video tape them and their vehicle and possibly have a case in small claims court. Especailly if you got hurt trying to remove the toilet paper....or it hindered the sale of your home in some way.
If you really want to shoot them though...I would recommend using a paintball gun instead of airsoft ammo and try not to shoot for the head.
If they arrive by car and you are sneaky you could let the air out of their tires while they are doing your house ....then afterward you could collect the toilet paper and use it to wipe your but.
Good luck and Happy Halloween!

No, it's NOT legal, if you want them off your land, you say something like " Get out of here before I call the cops". Another thing you could do is hide with a garden hose and wait for them, however, if you do that, you're risking throwing someone into shock or seziures,if that happens, you could be held liable for throwing them into a shock so be careful if you take that approach. I live in Indiana and I know some laws differ a little. But I'm 99.9% sure you don't have the right to shoot them in IL. It's a time of year that they like to have fun. Things like soaping, corning is okay but NOT corning drivers as they pass by, corning someone in a moving car can scare them & cause them to have an accident.

Turning on the lawn sprinklers would be much more effective.
No, you don't have the right to shoot someone who is tp-ing your house with an airsoft gun. You aren't in any danger and have no justification for using force.
You do have the right to call the police on them and let them handle it.

Bound's hubby here:
First, depending on the state, your airsoft gun could be considered a firearm and the charges against you, at the minimum could be assault. It depends how fearful for thei life you make someone feel. In most states, you can't use "lethal force" to prevent property damage. You would be wrong completely across the board. Take mischief night in it's theme. Use mischief to pay back or prevent mischief.

If you can get them to stop without using force, force is not allowed.
(720 ILCS 5/7‑2) (from Ch. 38, par. 7‑2)
Sec. 7‑2. Use of force in defense of dwelling.
(a) A person is justified in the use of force against another when and to the extent that he reasonably believes that such conduct is necessary to prevent or terminate such other's unlawful entry into or attack upon a dwelling.

I do not know Illinois law specifically but my understanding is that shooting someone with a projectile weapon is not justified if they are TPing your house, which is not a physical threat to your person.

You're only "allowed" to shoot someone if your life is in danger. And then you're not really "allowed" so much as likely to be found not guilty.
