In a function like y = f(x) we say that x is the independent variable and y is the dependent variable. The x is in the domain of the function and y is in the image. You choose a x from the domain... there is no restriction to choose... did you get? x is independent. After choosing the x you evaluate the y... the result depend on the function f... did you get? y is dependent.
