I don't know how long till they rot, but they will keep from getting black longer if you coat all exposed areas with petroleum jelly. The inside and anywhere you carve pieces out.

Depending on where you keep the pumpkin it can start rotting in a day. If you have it in doors near a heater or in warm room like kitchen, that speeds up the ripening time. Most pumpkins don't rot completely at once but start off with little spots here and there. If it doesn't ruin the design of the carving, cut that nick out and fill with Vaseline. It will make it last a little longer.

We just had our annual pumpkin decorating party, and all the pumpkins got moldy and began rotting after one week. They were kept inside though, so maybe it shortened the time.

It'll last past Halloween if you carve it today. They last a wekk or so before they start looking wilted. Depends on the weather, though.

What does it matter now? Carve it today and put it outside. Halloween is over Tuesday. You don't need it after that.
