I wouldn't say critical, for example if you are looking at one of the AMDs that is socket 939 you will have to use DDR. You need to focus spending your money on a good processor and graphics card, then worry about memory. But of course if you can afford it, then get it, becasue DDR2 is better.

Not to say critical, but if you have DDR2 then better. (but only DDR2 ram without a highspeed processer and a highperformance motherboard won't support gaming at all)
