What if you know of a good regular mechanic? Do German car specialists really do anything special that a regular mechanic would not do?

If it is under warranty you may have to take it to a Volkswagen garage.

If you have no warranty and the dealership where you bought the car is expensive or doesn't have a garage - Ask your mechanic , he will know what cars he is comfortble working on.

Well,it's true that a mechanic is a mechanic, but if you choose one who specializes in German cars, you can rest assured that he has metric tools and knows what some of the very strange and unusual parts are that European cars have. You are more likely to actually get your car fixed and serviced well if you take it to someone with specialized experience, because they don't need to make all the beginner's mistakes that your average mechanic might make trying to find out how to do weird, European stuff - and it's your money in the end.

I would take it to a German Independent mechanic.

chances are, the techs that specialize in german cars have more training, tools, experience than a tech that doesn't see these cars a whole lot. that's not to say these guys are better techs, just may have more experience than a guy that doesnt work on them a whole lot. most independant shops have internet sites that help them with info, etc., so, my prev. statement is not an absolute. just generally speaking.
