Unfortunately for goldfish, people often make mistakes.
Regular goldfish themselves need at least 200 gallons to grow nicely.
Fancy ones need a tank that has heat and stable parameters. So no less than 10 gallons. Unlike commons, fancy ones do require care. They are more susceptible to diseases, and injuries, so no sharp objects or plastic plants.
a site I recommend is aquarium advice: it provides lots of information.

Goldfish need bigger tanks than people tend to think...generally a good rule of thumb is 30 gallons per 1 fish and 10 more for each additional fish. They also need filtration due to the huge amount of ammonia they produce. If you can, I'd get your goldfish at least a 10 gallon, but if you can afford bigger, it would be better for him. Make sure you get a filter (here's a hint, if you get a filter that is rated for a larger tank than you have, your tank will stay cleaner longer.) I'd get a betta to put into your 3 gallon. Good luck.

It depends on the size of the goldfish? Mine's a regular sized one and I personally wouldn't put it in a 3 gallon tank. It's currently in a 10 gallon.

It should be fine for a while, just make sure you keep the water clean. I had 2 gold fish that lived for years. Had them in a 10 gallon aquarium and they both grew very large.

Really, fish need as much space as you can give them. You need to understand they are not like other caged pets that you can let out to get some exercise and variety. This aquarium is their life, give it something that will make it happy. In truth, i would think even a 10 gal aquarium would be barealy adequate, but give him as much space as you can

Yeah, it'll be fine. I had a goldfish in a 2 gallon bowl and he thrived. I moved him to a tank, and he loves it there, too.
