The difference between the average and extraordinary is defined by there ability to overcome fear and laziness.

The extraordinary individual is logically pursuing the dreams that so many other are to afraid or to lazy to achieve.

Humanity is just like any other small group - anytime one is willing to do the work of the many, the many are more than happy to sit back and take credit for the outcome so long as it's positive.

Such as a couch potato taking pride in his country fairing well at the Olympics.

The extraordinary are not bound by illogical social confines, and have the freedom of thought and presence of mind to transcend the physical and mental boundaries of the epoch the are born into.

You must give us some criteria and context before we can answer that question. Someone who was extraordinarily kind and loving may never have achieved the kind of externally validated success we often associate with extraordinary people. Also, extra ordinary, or beyond ordinary, as an adjective can be both positive and negative. Someone might be extraordinarily evil or vicious.

Then there is term "average". Average people don't actually exist. If you take the numbers 1, 2, 8 and 9, add them up and divide by 4, you get an average of 5. Yet 5 was nowhere in my original sequence of numbers. Just so with people. In any given subset of people, there are individuals who are high on whatever scale you are using, and individuals who are low. But there are probably very few that hit the exact average of whatever criteria you are using.

An average person is just that -- average. But an extraordinary person has some unique quality, a skill, a talent, an ability, plus the drive and compulsion to make the most of that unique quality. There are many average people who are gifted in some way, but who are too lazy to use their gift. So they remain, just average.
There are also some extraordinary people who aren't really that gifted, but who have taken whatever minimal ability they have and used it for all they are worth. They have given their lives to making the most of that ability. And it is often their drive that makes then extraordinary.

An extraordinary person is just that to some, meaning it depends on your point of view. The average I.Q. in the U.S.A. is about 95, but there are people with low I.Q.s with more drive and determination, not to mention good looks, friends and money, who are capable of many things, whereas I am an average nice guy with a crappy job, two kids and am putting my wife through college, so my life's been on hold for awhile. I guess a person who knows he has no set limits and has a good, caring heart and a better than average I.Q. is my definition of what an extraordinary person is.

An extraordinary person is one who--hell, I don't know. He probably flies around like superman. What a question? Seriously, I suppose it is in seeking to prioritize the good overall to one's own sense of what is good, thus able to see that when there is a conflict between what one wants and what is good for others he seeks what is good for the many as opposed to himself. An extraordinary person sees compassion as the highest intellectual virtue and from it becomes wiser and more understanding of the human condition and less judgmental of others.
