we sometimes give out individual size bags of microwave popcorn. Places like Sam's Club usually have it in a large box, and it's got Halloween wrappings.

I gave out Pez last year, the ones in the plastic wrap, not the card-boarded ones. This year I couldn't find a good deal on it so I've settled for the Reese's Peanut Butter "eggs" like were once only available at Easter, but now try to make for each holiday in a different shape. They come in a 6 pack for about $2 each at Target. Besides a dozen of those I have mini Butterfingers and single Reese's PB Cups.

I wouldn't do anything home made mostly because parents will most likely not let them eat it any way. I would stick to commercially produced candy. But if your feeling ambitious you can always doll up some standard candies. Like turning sucker's into ghosts, and Hershey's kisses into mice, etc. But free warning this can turn into a lot of work if you have a lot of trick or treaters.

Probably the best and safe thing to give treat or treaters is god to the dollar store and get them pencils, pens, erasers and other stuff and put them in plastic bags and give one to each, The kids won't like them much but the parents will love them. SO have a safe HAlloween

Its best if its packaged. Pretty much everything has already been thought of. My friends and I always like the chocolate best out of all the candy. Those little assorted chocolate bars are good, kids and teens LOVE gum. hand out bubble gum. And stickers are cool too. If you have a bunch of old little junk toys from McDonald's, hand those out. lol we did that one year. If you have a lot of time on your hands, buy suckers, wrap a Kleenex or a little white bag over them and draw eyes and a mouth to make them look like little ghosts. Make sure you have soft candy like 3 musketeers bars that way really little kids can have them unlike gum or suckers. I personally love jolly ranchers, and Twix bars too. =D

Back in the day-before the child molesters and the weirdos-a woman down the street used to make homemade popcorn balls. It was a race to get to her place before she was all out.

Those were the days.

Anyhow I personally like the the funsize candy bars.

When kids are trick-or-treating:::
What my friends like to do is... when kids ring our doorbell, i would have it locked. if they tried to open the door, my sis would shock 'em. When they turn back and do another house... my friend would be behind them in a dark cape (so they can't see any of his body) and ask if they want some candy in a dark scary voice... then some others would drop candy from a tree he was standing near by... and the guy in the cape would say, "there you go" and he would shrink back into the darkness. It is so fun and everybody loves it... the kids and us.

Other ideas my friends and I have done:
~Hang long strands of white thread on your porch to simulate spider webs. Make them long enough so that little kids will be able to feel them, too. Spray them with water to add an extra creepy factor. Use a drill powered Cobweb Spinner or Stretchable Cob Webs to web your Halloween props and decorations.
~ask the kids if they want treat or a trick, if a treat, give them candy or an alternate; if they want a trick, give them a whoopee cushion or something like that.
~Tie small glow sticks to string attached to helium balloons and let them sail over your house for spooky lights in the sky. Make sure to tie off the strings to something solid so they do 't get away.
~Adding a strobe light to your yard haunt can really jazz it up. You can use it along with a fog machine for extra effect. Using a rope type spider web, add a giant spider. If you place a light source behind it, a strobe or flicker light, it will give the illusion that the spider is moving.
~Use your garage for setting up a small walk-through haunt. You can turn it into anything you want, a mad scientist lab, a vampires tomb, a grave yard
~Black lights add an eerie touch to your party or haunt. You can find them all over year round, use the florescent lights as opposed to screw in bulbs which are not true U.V. light. For an eerie effect, hang glow-in-the-dark bats, skeletons and spiders from the ceilings and trees! Write scary Halloween messages or body outlines on your front walk using colored chalk or washable fluorescent paint. Use a black lights to enhance the effect.

Candy:::
the best candy is chocolate ~ for halloween, DON't get the non-brand cheap stuff that tastes like crap, because they take advantage of your wallet. ALWAYS get the brand names like reese's and hersheys. Its also good to get the brand names because most parents of little kids will throw away cheap things and things that look homemade (unless they know you or the person). For halloween, also have non- chocolate candy because there is some people in the world who are allergic or doesn't like chocolate ~ so be fair to everyone. :). Ideas include smarties and dumdums.

Treats:::
alternate ideas to candy... for kids who can't have it, are allergic to it, or parents don't want kids to have cavities. This includes... mini-decks of cards, kazoos, mini- tic-tac-toe, mini- checkers, whistles, themed pencils & erasers, balloons (water or regular), fake money, mardi gras beads, plastic hand clappers, fun rubber duckys, party poppers, fake (shock) gum, plush stars, bubble bottles, confetti, etc. Get mini idems and buy them bulk. You can go into the party aisle at walmart/ kmart or a party store and usually get these ideas. Kids love them, and parents appreciate them. If you order these ideas, you can certainly go to www.orientaltrading.com ~ they have tons of favors inexpansive that aren't 'cheap'.

other ideas include:::
~those coupons for Wendy's frostys - they're like 5 for $1
~old fast food toys - make sure they are packaged or clean for little kids.
~mini bags of popcorn - make sure they are packaged with no open holes or rips.
~if you do candy, it would be nice for kids if you had a vairety... soft chocolates/ candies for little kids who are growing in their teeth, lots of gum 'cause everyone likes gum, hard candies, suckers, etc. You don't have to spend a lot of money, but it would be nice to have a vairety.

Parties:::
if you are creating a party for the trick - or -treaters:::
~Serve your Halloween punch or spiced apple cider from a large hollowed-out pumpkin. Use a large ladle to serve in orange cups.
~Serve fresh veggies using a hollowed out pumpkin as a bowl. Cut of the top and clean out, leaving the top in a jagged edge design. Use mini pumpkins to hold dips
~Use clear food handlers plastic gloves to freeze ice hands to throw in the punch bowl. It will keep it cold and look great
~Keep your pumpkin seeds when gutting your pumpkin so you can roast them up later for a fun Halloween treat

Hope this helps... woo that was a lot of typing!!!
Good luck with your halloween plans and happy halloween!!!
