The deltoidss is a small muscle anything under 1ml of fluid can be injected into the deltoid. The ventrogluteal is made for anything over 1ml and if my memory is correct the depo is about 1-2 ml and is considered ventrogluteal injection.

I have had my depo shots in the arm, so there is no problem there, but it is recommended that IM injections are given in the thigh or butt due to the fact that the muscle is larger, and can cope with a fluid injection and absorb it quicker, and therefore won't hurt as much.

I had to take shots that the nurse INSISTED had to go in the butt; as it happens, however, I don't deal well with shots there (long story, which I'll spare you). I talked to my doctor, and he ok'd the shot for the arm, and wrote it in my chart. There are a few times when a shot should go into the butt - usually, however, these are shots which have a LARGE volume of fluid to be injected. Talk with your doc, and see what he/she has to say.

You sure can, you can get an intra-muscular injection in any muscle. People usually chose the gluteaus b/c it is the biggest.

Yes. I was on depo for 2 years, and it was always given in my left arm. I highly recommend not getting this shot. Since I began using it, I was spotting and bleeding for months on end, my hair fell out, and I fell into deep depression. I have been off of depo for about an year, and am still taking anti-depressants from this. My hair a stopped falling out, but has not grown back fully. Also, I gained weight and my friend had many other problems. She has joint pain from it, as well as depression, heart problems, and her bones are now fragile. I know that some people do not have these problems, but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE watch out for any change in your body if you must take this.

They actually give them out up here (Michigan) in the stomach. Speaking from someone who has had shots in both the buttocks and the arm, the butt really isn't all that bad.

Yes technically it can, however it works better in the gluteus. The muscle releases it slowly over a three month period. I think the main reason is the gluteus muscle is bigger.

I know of people that take it in the upper thigh or their hip. Said it was better than their butt.

I thought my friend got hers in the arm. Or she just never mentioned it, so I assumed it was. I'm not really sure. But I think you can.
