I think rocks would be good cause they are free and you can pick them up anywhere you go and some of them can be quite pretty depending on where you find them. It is a great hobby and if he has a good imagination ask him to make up a story that goes along with the rock. Good luck and god bless.

Rocks are great to collect - they're either free anywhere you go, or cheap at science stores. And they're pretty - but your son can use his own judgement to decide which ones to keep. It's a great no-risk first collection.

How about the State quarters for starters? My son is 9 and he loves them! He now also collects old pennies and the new nickels.

Boys seem to like yucky things, so how about bugs? Or maybe he would like to collect rocks? You could take him around to yard sales and get him started collecting old action-figures.
