Every year it's different. This year I carved a "kappa" a Japanese water spirit that looks like a humanoid turtle, except with a small indentation in it's head shaped like a bowl, that is filled with the water from it's home. I did it over two weeks ago and had to soak the pumpkin twice in bleach and water to kill the ants, mold, and let it swell it up again.
I also did a "doc cu'o'c" which is a guardian spirit that appears as half a man with an axe. So I cut a pumpkin in half and carved half a face on it. It looked like ***** except for at one specific angle, so I tossed it after a couple of embarrassing days on my porch.
I have a new pumpkin and will try to think of something else before carving it tomorrow.

It's Physallis you have in mind but it's common name is Chinese Lanterns not Jack o Lantern. Jack O Lantern is a pumpkin.

Something different each year, it's more fun that way. I have a spider in a web, a little devil, a raccoon popping out of a jack-o-lantern, and a spider web on jack-o-lanterns this year. Last year it was cartoon characters. I usually let my son pick what we're going to carve.

I usually do 8 to 10 pumpkings per year. I have approximately 100 different patterns to choose from. I got a majority of them from Pumpkin Masters pattern books I have one or two that I do every year and the rest depend on the shape of the pumpkins I buy.

I suggest carving it any way you want. Just put a bowling ball in it instead of a candle. When the punks come to smash it, they'll be in for a BIG surprise!!

My family hasn't carved a jack-o-lantern since I was in Kindergarten. A long, long, long, long time ago... Too many punk kids in the neighborhood. I think you can fill in the rest.
