If you are going to donate to a shelter for battered women, clothing for adults and children is always good. Also appreciated are gift bags with shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, body lotion etc...
Diapers, formula, bottles and other baby supplies
Some shelters like food donations.
Most shelters have a non-emergency line to call for information. See if any in your area have a specific need.

There is a program that takes used cellphones and donates them to battered women so they always have a way to call for help, that their spouse doesn't control.
There are many organizations that support battered women. The two that are found all over the US are the YWCA and the Salvation Army. You can contact these charities in your area and see what they need.
You could check this site: http://dir.yahoo.com/Society_and_Culture/Issues_and_Causes/Housing/Homelessness/Organizations/Relief_Organizations/Shelters/
Then contact a local agency and ask them what they need.
eHow: http://www.ehow.com/how_8642_volunteer-battered-womens.html
Will also give you help finding a local shelter to talk to.

GREAT question! They'd obviously prefer money, but if you can't do that, they always need stuff like kids' & women's clothes, household items (soap, towels, dishes, baby bottles, toilet paper, paper towels, diapers, toothpaste...even tampons!), furniture, esp. cribs, toddler beds and high chairs, curtains, sheets, child-proofing items, games, toys. I'd call the shelter you have in mind and ask...they'll let you know, so you don't waste a trip. I did this severa times and it made me feel very good. I'm not sure about food...I never had any left to donate...but ask anyway. It's nice to see someone thinking of others!

Just call your local women's shelter society and ask them what items are needed the most. Then choose to make your donation that way.'

the thing shelters need the most is underwear. since it's a battered womens shelter they would need kids and womens underwear.
why dont you try doing a mini-drive with some friends and get everyone to buy underwear and donate it?

imagine you and your children just walked out of your house with only the clothing you are wearing at this moment.......what would you need to start a new life? that is exactly what they need.
furniature is always a biggie because so few people donate it.....especially beds.
(everyone else's answers were great! those are all things they need and you can call your local DV shelter and ask what is needed at this time)

Games for kids, sheets, if you have a beanie baby collection(they are not worth anything anyways) donate that. Make some simple childrens quilts, that you can tie, (in case you don't sew. ) any arts/craft projects that kids can do..to keep them busy. baby diapers, formula. I would even think books would be good. Go with your heart..you can't go wrong!

Where are you located? If in Vancouver you can donate at 1029 Commercial Drive.
But deer is right. Clothing (children and adult), shoes, toiletries, furniture, household items, small appliances. Things to get on their feet and start over.

If donations go straight to the facility, call or go by and ask what they can use. If it goes to a thrift shop run by the society, you can take anything you like to it.

Anything, everything from household goods to clothings. Money for the organization, clothing of all sizes for women, and children. Toys, books, crayons.....Those women sometime run away from their abusers with only the cloth on their back and with their kids. They would need everything to start their lives all over again. Bless your heart for helping them out.
