The Kinsey Reports of 1948 and 1953 stated 37% of males and 13% of females had homosexual experiences with 10% of males being more or less exclusively homosexual and 2% to 6% of females being more or less exclusively homosexual.
A 1990 study (Homosexuality/Heterosexuality by McWhirter, Sanders, and Reinisch) stated 13.95% of males and 4.25% of females had "extensive" or "more than incidental" homosexual experience.
A 1993 study (The Janus Report on Sexual Behavior) found 9% of men and 5% of women were involved in frequent or ongoing homosexual experiences, but only 4% of men and 2% of women called themselves homosexual. This difference can be attributed as those who were 'out' and those who were 'closeted'.
It appears that the number of male homosexuals is approximately 10% and the number of female homosexuals is approximately 4%. It also appears that only half of those who are truly homosexual are "out".

even though society has become more enlightened and accepting as a whole, there are still a lot of people out there who hate/bash us and try to take rights away, and want more laws preventing us from having further rights.
and for that reason, I'm sure the percentage of about 10 % is actually low...as there are still many in our community that are closeted.

I've heard about 10 percent but that doesn't seem to include bisexuals or married men who only do it occasionally.

Non-baised stats have put the number between 4-8%.
In the end, it doesn't matter because if ONE American is denied his or her constitutional rights, that is too many.

Ten percent is pretty accurate from what I've seen. Of course it may be a bit higher.

Last I heard it's 10%. That's 10% of 300,000,000 or 300,000 gay men and women.
