Ideas I see so far are all valid possibilities, but did you ever check the water? Beleive it or not , the watertemp sender will send an overheat message to the computer, and it will make it run like "junk" to get your attention! If you have an idiot light (and maybe the "idiot sender" isn't working), or the light is burned out, --you get nothing indicated on the dashboard!

If the catylitic converter is bad, you probably will see the converter (the first"wart" in the exhaust coming out from the engine end), - will turn red hot at night after it has run a while, - especially if you try to drive it 4 or 5 miles! You might even be able to see the "glow" on the ground without climbing under to look!

If you take it to a muffler shop, they can "take out" the converter and put in a "test" pipe, and drive the car to see if it functions properly then! This shouldn't cost you a whole lot, (maybe $35-45), but be careful, you want to see the car go like it should, don't take their word for it and just replace it, because it is "old and about due anyway"! A new catylitic converter will cost you probably in excess of $200 (depending on the shop and the labor rate!) You wouldn't want to invest this much, and then find out that you still have the problem and have to have something else expensive done on top of this! That $200 could be well used on the actulal problem repair!

Last of all, if the catylitic converter is working properly, and getting "fed" properly by the computer programming, == it should last for a real long time!

If it don't seem to be skipping, check the catalytic converter, If you are losing power on a incline, have the fuel filter changed. If those check out ok, it would be best to spend a little money and put it on a diagnostic machine. The quad 4 motors, usually run real well.

This could be caused by a plugged catalytic converter and/or a severe misfire. I would suggest getting a more accurate diagnosis from a mechanic.

It could be fuel, ignition, cylinders not firing, low compression, bad spark plugs, timing belt etc etc etc. Did it happen all at once or over a period of time.
