There are 5 in the standard bolt pattern of each wheel but theoretically the lug nuts go on the studs attatched to front brake rotors & the rear brake drums to secure the the wheels to the hub.
Nascar will allow them to race with just four if one happens to go astray during a tire change as long as the four are tightened properly. However, whether it's 4 or 5 all must be tight or driver must return to the pits to complete the service.

5 lug nuts on each wheel. They glue them to the wheel to make it faster and easier to put the new ones on.

This makes me wonder . back in the sprint car days we had one center piece. I think it was called the quick change it was in big bolt? in the middle and they changed the tire w/center bolt. I don't know if nascar uses the same. It would be interesting to know. I checked into it and the other guys are right 5 is correct. good question
