and why do the adults keep eating the babies they are in two 10 gallon tanks

Convicts are possibly the easiest of the cichlid family to spawn and are very good, protective parents. I have successfully spawned and raised them in a 15 gallon tank. Bigger is better, of course, so try to go with a 20-30 gallon if you can.

The problem arises when you do not remove the babies (fry) from the first spawn and they spawn again. Their protective behavior in guarding the new batch of fry is then directed at the older, larger group because the parents fear they might eat the new batch.

If you keep removing the fry every time they spawn, you will have more convicts than you can handle.
