i went and saw the movie "the departed" this weekend.
for anyone who hasnt seen or heard of this movie its a gangster movie directed by martin scorcese starring jack nicholson and leonardo dicaprio.. anyway.. its a 18+ rating if not restricted
brutal violence, drug use, serious crime, and overall language was unbeleiveably crude (words like c*nt, p*uss*, f*ck). a greatly entertaining movie for ADULTS.. i enjoyed it throughly being 27 years old...
BUT... there was this woman who came into the theatre with a i would guess 6 year old (at the oldest) boy and stayed for almost the entire movie!!
i couldnt beleive it..i was stunned and wanted so bad to say something to this woman once the theatre let out (something sarcastic like "great movie for your child eh?!" she ended up leaving about 10 mins before it ended
for anyone who has seen this movie.. would i have been out of line? and is it weird for me to be quite disgusted with this woman for exposing this movie to that child?
opinions pls!

i thought maybe she might have came into the wrong theatre, but almost right from the start of the movie, you see brutal violence, and you would think she would walk out then!

I know, I see that kind of thing ALL the time. Imagine what they let them watch at home!
R rating apparently allows for under 18s to come to the movies as long as their parents are with them...it's pretty bad I know, but I think if you tried to say anything to a (so called) parent like that, your remark is not going to be well received, and they are going to more than likely comment back (and not pleasantly) and that would be bad too to happen in front of a child. I'd never say anything myself, since it really wouldn't accomplish anything.

Although I agree with you that the movie wasn't appropriate, people do it all the time and if they paid there's not much we can say about it.

Along those same lines, I get so disgusted when I hear young children sing explicit lyrics and reciting gangsta rap songs. These parents feel that they shouldn't have to ruin their entertainment by not blasting the music when their child is present or in watching an explicit film. These are also the same parents who deny any wrong doing when their child gets in trouble at school for mimicking what they saw and heard.

For instance, I'm not sure where you live but a few years ago here in the SF/Bay Area a little boy severely beat an infant because he said he saw it on a video that his parents were watching. The infant survived but has lasting brain damage. The parents claim they had no idea he viewed the movie. Yeah right! At any rate the boy was removed from his family home and placed in a facility for disturbed and mentally challenged children.

When are folks going to wake up and realize these ratings were made for a reason. We wouldn't take our child to see a porn so why subject them to violence and explicit language?

Agreed, bad choice, bad move - BUT if she was happy for her kid to be there - the poor sod probably hears that for real every day and more besides - hence seeing it as "no big deal" for him to hear it on a movie.

At least this time someone else was screaming obscenities and they weren't in the same house as the lad.

I am just curious as to why she left 10 minutes early!

I also have to say that at almost every school, most of them will already be exposed to all of those words - and a few more you and I perhaps haven't even heard of yet.

It doesn't make it right, but I am guessing that the kid didn't look too fazed by it all when they left.

i don't like going to theaters anymore... people that don't have baby sitters take their kids to see things they want to see, and you end up with kids running all around making people move their legs over and over so these kids can play and scream the whole time... kids asking why did they do this or that or what does that mean b/c it's not a movie for them to watch, and strollers coming in while a baby is screaming for being woken up for how loud the movie is. i used to enjoy going to theaters, but not anymore. you should only be allowed to take young kids into a theater to see kid movies. i have a kid, and i would never be that rude to others that acutally want to see the movie and pay money in order to do so. most people think the mall is a baby sitter though... kids run all around with no parent around anymore. and we wonder why we have missing kids

Yes, you would have been out of line.

No. You are not weird for having these feelings.

You see it every day with Moms from the 8 kids in the grocery store madhandling the bread and EVERY package of cookies to the lady in chruch who tells her kid if he doesn't shut the f**k up she'll have to kill him.
But to tell another adult stranger how to raise their child is NO business of yours unless asked for. Especailly if its going to be just a sarcastic remark to make YOURSELF feel better.

I didn't see the movie but if it was rated 18+ and I would assume restricted I don't understand why the movie personnel would allow the child in! I feel you but I probably wouldn't get involved if the staff at the theater allowed it! Peace!

if i were a mom i would want my kid to see martin scorcese movies -- hes brilliant! 6 might be a little young though. A friend of mine won't let her 12 yr old son see anything with boobs in it but simulated sex without boobs is ok. censorship in any form is kind of stupid.

Yeah, I agree. Maybe she accidentaly walked into the wrong theater! ;-) That's really a bad choice on the mother's part.

Yes she has no scruples. the movie ticket probably cost less than getting a baby sitter. Maybe she needed her hand holding!!!!

Remember what she looks like. In 15 years when you see her on television yelling,

"My baby ain't no killer! The police set him up!"

You will know he is guilty.
