Social pressure, the drive to be successful, and very fast paced lives with little time to stop and look at what is really important.

Poor diet, foods are loaded with additives that aggravate hormonal balance; coffee drinkers need to beware too.
The world is in total chaos especially since 9/11 (look at anxiety group chat rooms as research, most anxiety sufferers say it began in 2001).
Society is overindulging in work, debt (credit cards and loans), sex, violence and technology. This leads to stress.
All the above causes mental, physical, and emotional imbalance, thus, a perfect breeding ground for anxiety.
I know I missed a couple of causes but these are the main factors.

Because we're starting to acknowledge that we all have it. We're coming out of several decades of emotional repression and non-communication as a learned behavior; and now we're starting to acknowledge that the feelings and thoughts we have are our own. Many people lack the forum or even ability to discuss their problems, of which anxiety tends to be the most general and generic, which explains why we see such attention paid to it in the media.

There's a whole industry whose aim is to keep us unsatisfied, worried and anxious. Politicians, news organizations and marketers all have a vested interest in convincing us we're not safe.
Watch the news: If it bleeds, it leads, they say. So it's just a series of murders, fires, earthquakes, wars, etc, etc...
Our politics (especially since 9/11) are all about fear: In addition to the whole terrorist issue, politicians always implicitly say: If you vote for my opponent the economy/health care system/education system, etc... , will fail and you will experience misery and hardship.
Then there's publicity for all sorts of companies attempting to convince you you're unsafe all the time: Have you been planning for retirement? Do you really know what's in your diet? Is that car you're driving really safe? You think you're insured - have you checked the small print in your policy, lately?
Then there's an army of environmentalists, nutritionists, health experts, terrorism experts, security experts, all discussing what's unsafe around you and just exactly how it's going to kill you in a very near future.
Some of these concerns are legitimate, but given all this, the surprising thing is so many of us still manage to be functional and not just small balls of anxiety whimpering in a corner in the dark.

i think it is a mix inbetween the fear of rejection and the pressure put on people by what they see in everyday life pushing them to be one way or another and all these ads and comercialism is basicly telling them that if they are not one spesific way then they are not good enough. so so many people are striving to be something that they are not so much that they start to feel uncomfortable with themselves and get caught up in trying to be acceptable in the eyes of others that they just start getting anxous and then anxiety problems just develop from it.

worry or anxiety is a problem because people refuse to understand the Source of Peace. "Don't worry about anything. Instead, pray about everything. Tell God your needs and don't forget to thank Him for His answers."
