There's a lot of ways to go about getting a job in the game industry and it's not limited to learning to do 3D or code (although there will always be jobs for them). There's QA (game testing), sound engineers, concept artists, producers (which can come from traditional management backgrounds), visual effects, graphic designers who make UI etc.

Even amongst the programmers and 3D artists, there's a huge variation in their role. The industry is getting more and more specialized. Where before you have 2 or 3 programmers, now you have one person who only programs physics or the graphics engine or just the AI, etc.

As for the money aspect, try not to over-emphasize it. It's more important to figure out what your interests, skills and talents are. Just because you can do some 3D doesn't mean a game company will hire you - you have to be good at what you do.

I really suggest you read the excellent article I've posted in my sources "How to get started in the game industry" by Ernest Adams. It's a little older, but most of the points are still very valid.

Also check out the articles on the Game Career Guide online about Getting Started. There's a wealth of information there.

Good luck!
