12x + 10y = total

you have 12 pencils times x boxes plus 10 pens times x boxes,,,when you replace the x and the y with numbers and multiply out the problem, you will get the total number of pens and pencils.

You'll have to do this yourself when you do you rexam you know. However, given that I'll try to explain.

a) If she packed 1 box she would have packed 1 lot of 12 pencils 1 * 12 = 12

If she packed 2 boxes, she would have packed 2 lots of 12 pencils, 2 * 12 = 24

If she packed 3 boxes, she would have packed 3 lots of 12 pencils, 3 * 12 = 36

Hopefully you can see that if she packs x boxes she would have packed x lots of 12 pencils. We write this as x * 12 pencils or 12 * x or more simply 12x

Since this works just as well for the pens only replacing with10 and y, if she packs y boxes she would have packed 10 * y pens or 10y

To find the total number of pens & pencils add the two expressions together. 12 * x + 10 * y. Or a quicker way to write this is to ignore the multiply sign in the middle and you get 12x + 10y = The total number of pens and pencils Lisa packs.

I suggest you ask your teacher to go through this with you. Don't feel silly about asking for help from him or her it is important that you learn how to answer this yourself and understand how you did it.

Say she packs 10 boxes. She then has packed 10 boxes of 12 pencils. Which is 10*12 pencils.
If we don't know how many boxes she's packed, we could instead say she's packed X boxes of pencils, which is then X boxes of 12 pencils. Which is X*12 pencils, or 12X.

If we do the same for the number of pens, she's packed 10*Y pens (into Y boxes).

The total is then the total pens plus the total pencils, which is 10Y+12X

a). expression = 12x (12 times x)

b). expression = 10y (10 times y) answer = 12x + 10y

i got my answer because to find the total number of pencils and pens packed you have to times the number of packs by the number of items going in each pack. in this case, we don't know how many packs so we substitue it in for x or y. good luck
