This is from memory so it's hazy and very incomplete, but the division between tribes was an artificial one created by the Belgians, based on physical size. The numerically smaller but physically larger Tutsis one ruled the Hutus for most of the period since independence, and the first leader of the country to come from the Hutus was killed in a plane crash. This was the catalyst for the violence against Tutsis, however it was probably planned by extreme Hutus beforehand.
