No, they dont make good movies because... directors', actors and scripts can never convey what a whole book can do in two hours, and still make it good.

Since everyone said "No" I'll take the other side. I think books can make excellent movies. Many many great movies are based on books. Such as the Virgin Suicides, Leaving Las Vegas (the book wasn't that good actually but the movie was oscar-winning), Election, The World According to Garp, Interview with a Vampire, etc.
Also, I think the best horror I've ever seen in The Shining which was originally a Stephan horror novel. This movie is phenomenal because Stanley Kubrick is masterful and Jack Nicholson is a wonderful actor. And Jaws is also a really great movie but this too was directed by Stephan Spielberg, one of the most respected directors of our time. I think a horror novel can be a great and scary film if it had a good director and cast. Unfortunately these days horror translates to B-movie and there most horror films star unknow actors and directors that are just getting their start. So, these films are never of the same caliber as dramas. In fact, the genre has been so flooded with crappy slasher flicks and cliches, most established directors don't even consider taking on a horror project. I also think established actors aren't drawn to horror because often horror scripts call for the exploitation of a scantilly-clad woman being a victim or a villian is that masked the whole time. Establish actors find nothing worthy in such project. That said, it's not books that don't make good horror novels it's the fact that good directors aren't as interested.

No they don't.
When an author writes a good horror novel it's very descriptive and draws the reader in allowing them to use their imagination. When a movie is made from the book, those who have read it are usually very disappointed. Characters are left out and the majority of the original plot is missing because most movies won't go over 2 hours. So the readers feel cheated.
A perfect example is The Green Mile by Stephen King. The characters in the book were well thought out and when reading the novel you felt as if you knew the people personally. Although the movie was well done, there was a lot missing. Yes we all knew Johe Coffy wasn't the killer but the movie failed to really develop how things really worked out. We knew from the movie that Percy was a jerk but the book went into more detail on why he was the way he was and the other things that he did to torture the inmates. There are other examples but I'm supposed to be studying for midterms and not answering these questions.
Hope what I gave you helps

They should with all the latest advances in special effects technology, but NO, I would say 9 times out of 10 the books do not translate well into movies. I can think of only 2 examples where the movie was as good as or at least close to the book.
Stephen King's Pet Semetery and Anne Rice's Interview with a vampire.

No they dont make good movies because...
They have far too much detail to fit into under 3 hours to make it worthwhile. Take Elisabeth Kostova's "The Historian" for example. You couldn't fit in enough detail to make a movie "work" quite as the book has without editing out some crucial & often most tense & exciting parts.
I know the Da Vinci Code isn't horror as such but I was thoroughly disappointed at how the movie played out compared to the book, the information given in the movie was far too sparse to fully understand and comprehend the emotions you should have felt from the book.
