For a position paper, always choose a topic that interests you because it makes it far, far easier (and much more enjoyable!) when its your opinion being stated.

The point of a position paper is to show how well you can express your opinion and how well you convince your audience of your argument. So if you can be convincing with a controversial opinion that more people care about, it's far more effective!

Topics can range from the very serious like the environment or politics (like why we shouldn't drive hybrid cars or use alternative energy sources), something that affects people around you (like support outsourcing jobs or raising the legal age for driving) or something personally relevant (arguing against mandatory physical education or homework has no benefit (it's been proven in studies!))

You can also go for a less serious topic. I've personally written a paper on why fairy tales are inappropriate for children, although it's easier to write an effective paper on something serious.
