Water on it's own does no damage. The problem comes from all the impurities (salts & other minerals) contained in the water.
Because many such impurities are electrical conductors they can cause electrical connections inside your PC to "short circuit".
This happens when separate components (trainsistors, diodes, capacitors, seminconductors, etc) that store electical current become connected.
Like another respondant said : "you could fry your whole machine if you turn it back on before totally dry".
A word of caution ... even if it is totally dry that does nort mean it's safe to turn it back on. Although the water evaporates the conductant minerals remain. The only 100% certain solution is to have the unit cleaned by a certified micro electrician (NOT JUST ANY PC TECH).
Odds are that just drying will be enough, however, there is no way to tell how badly damaged the PC will become once a current runs through it. I would have it opened up & cleaned by a reliable professional.
Good luck.

at the moment it would have became a device to smash the
upper body group of the one that spilled the water. but since we are peaceful people here. you did the right thing by turning it off,
and hopefully you removed the battery. let it set for a few days
(i know, it's hard) before booting it back up.thank goodness
that it was water and not a soft drink or coffee.

This could be very serious. Do not turn comp back on until totally dry. Could be a day or two. Risk of blowing everything if still wet when you plug it in.
