We have rented this old house for a a year and a half. My mom recently came to visit and got bit all over by bed bugs. In Feb. we bought brand new couches and the bugs have laid eggs on them and we found them hiding in the couches so I think they have been there a while. We told the Landlord and he said it is not his problem to take care of. I thought landlords were supposed to pay for those types of things. Does anoyone know?

Yes, if there is an infestation of bugs in the property, it is up to the landlord to get rid of them.

To be honest, it doesn't sound like the bed bugs were in the house when you rented it if you have been there for a year and a half and they only started to come out now. Their life cycle is only a year, tops.

Bed bug extermination is time consuming and costly. Everything, right down to the picture frames, has to be treated.

Unless your lease specifies that he will pay for exterminations, you probably are going to have to pay for it.

If you call the health dept., they might make him do it. Call and see.

Good Lord ... bed bugs are not "the result of poor hygiene" nor are they confined to beds and bedding. They can hide in luggage if you are traveling and they can be in furniture or anything you purchased. They can hitch a ride on you if you sit on a piece of infested furniture somewhere and then go home.

No. If the bugs were not there when they moved in, it is the the tenant's responsibility to pay to have them exterminated. Would you expect the landlord to pay if your dog got fleas? This subject is most likely spelled out in the Lease agreement.

You need to read your lease. With my lease's I clearly state there are no bugs/vermin in the house when you moved in, so anything you get you need to deal with. Every state has different laws regarding any and all issues, it may pay you to check out your local laws and again, read your lease. If the apt was not furnished and your landlord doesn't live in your apt, why would it be their fault?. I'm not trying to be smart, but think about it, would you hold your Mom responsible for the problem? She didn't furnish your apt. Good Luck KG

Bed bugs could be the result of poor hygiene or a form of negligence, in that case they shouldn't... very hard to prove tho!

I would say YES. But each locality has its own rules, so I suggest checking your county tenant-landlord regs. Good luck!

Only if they provided the bed and bedding, If those items belong to you then it becomes your responsibility.

Yes they do.

Be nice and just tell him that you don't want to have to go to the housing authorities or a lawyer and it will get done.
