I have firewall and antisyware (up to date) and a virus still got through my computer. I scanned the files and the computer said it corrected the probelm but I am still getting pop-ups saying that my computer is infected. What is going on? How did this happen? And what can I do to stop it?

None of them work 100%, try trend micro for a free on line scanner otherwise you may have to reformat!

I would go to the McAfee website. They have a free virus scan site and will perform a virus scan for you. If they find a virus or spyware, then you know that Norton is not picking up every virus or spyware that they could, and you might consider obtaining a McAfee virus, antispyware and firewall computer program from them. I have used their system for years, and had no problem. There are free programs out there as well, but sometimes you get what you pay for, and if your computer is expensive, as most of ours generally is, then you might want to invest in a slightly more sophisticated anti-spyware program, though nothing is foolproof today.

Both of these work good and are free.

Try this scan, its free, it removes
I-Worm/Stration · BackDoor.Generic3.GBB and .GBC · Worm/Generic.FX · Exploit.WMF

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free.

Reboot and push F8 when starting up to get into safe mode or figure out how to get into safe mode if that doesn't work. When you get into safe mode, then run a few Virus scans because sometimes it takes a few of them. If you know the name of the Virus, you can go in manually to your hard drive by clicking on Start, the RUN, and type regedit and click ok. This will put you into your hard drive. go through and manually delete files. DO NOT GO HERE if you do not know what you are doing. Anyway, when your done doing virus scans and removing stuff you can do a scan disk.....go into START/PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/SYSTEM TOOLS/SCAN DISK

The best program you can use as a clean up is Prevx1. you can download from prevx.com. Download install and let it do the scan. when it's done you will have a clean pc. Use it for the full 30 day trail to get the best benefit from it. After the 30days, you can buy their software or remove it. (be sure to remove it in safe mode). Best of Luck

With the ever increasing amount of malware running rampant across the internet you need more protection than what you have listed. For a complete clean up of your system please goto
www.geekstogo.com
sign up for a free account and go thru their malware guide, if the guide doesnt work then there are professionals there that can help you as well. As far as you may have to reformat, that is highly unlikely, only reformat as a very last resort.

In my spare time I test antivirus/spyware programs to see if they perform as claimed. Also to see if they have hidden embedded trojans, adware or malware.

Avast free for home use is I use an excellent state of the art technology that is far superior then any other free or purchase program. http://www.avast.com (They are out of Prague).

They will ask you for your email address so they can send you a free key that is good for one year. After one year you must request another free key. Their corporte avast is the same, they just make corporate pay.

I have used this program for nine plus years an I never had one virus in my system. It has an excellent realtime scanner in the background that is light years ahead of any one else with a background scanner. If you open a webpage and there is a hidden virus of any kind the background scanner will come on and destroy the virus. (Plus if you keep your speakers on you wil hear a male voice saying, "virus has just been destroyed". Likewise for the daily updates that come in on an automatic basis twice or three times per day. Scans all 180,000 objects in my system. And when it removes a virus from a registry key you can be assured that it is no longer in your system.

If you want to spend money I use what the Government of China uses for antivirus program. http://www.filseclab (They are out of Beijing, China). Both program are equal in my opinion on state of the art technology This program is "Twister", you pay a one time fee for life. Includes all automatic updates, excellent support an all new versions. (You will be hard pressed to find any one else who will give you this for a one time fee $29.99). Avast I use in my backup pc.

Please note that you can only use one antivirus program, or you will have serious conflict with your system. You can use three or four antispyware programs without conflict.

All of these programs that I am giving you are very low on resources. They are nothing like Nortons or Mcafee junk an one big resource hogs.

For spyware, adware, malware and rogue dialers, (I use ADSL, but like the added protection for rogue dialers)., Download from http://www.emsisoft.com This is an excellent company out of Austria. They also will ask you for your email so they can send you the key for the free version. I prefer the paid version, because it comes with an excellent backgroud scanner like "avast", and never will miss anyting. The free A2Squared v2 for personal home use, does not come with the background scanner.

Another good free one I use is from Sweden. http://www.lavasoft.com Download their free home personal versions Ad-Adware Se Personal. This company has been around long before any one ever thought of antispyware.

Last of all there is a good program out of Prague that I also use, "Ewido Spyware". This is a purchased only version that becomes free after thirty days if you decide not to purchase they will remove the background guard and the automatic updates. You will have to update on a manual basis. Also scans 175,000 objects in my system.

http://www.cyberhawk.com is an excellent free program for “zero day attacks”.

http://www.sophos.com You can download their free rootkit protection.

http://www.zonealarm.com Only use one firewall. This is an excellent free firewall with free updates an all new versions. Use their free home personal use one.

Sorry, but I have given you all of the above that I use, becasue you don't say the name of the firewall or antivirus system that you have. Hope it is not Nortons or Mcafee as they are garbage and each an every year continue to get worse.

Please note that you can only use one antivirus system or you will have serious conflict. So remove or shut down what you have for an antivirus system. You can use three or four antispyware programs without any conflict.

Plus always reboot once the infection has been cleaned.

That's probably because you dont have real time protection.
Plus you have to remember no one spyware program can protect
you. You need to have several. This website has some good
info if you need it.http://www.basicspywaretips.com/getridofspyware.html

try www.avast.com (avast antivirus) it updates daily and with a boot up scan can find anything. The best part of this is that it is free :D
