Praying mantids are often easily recognised due to their large size, which may range from 10 to 120 millimetres in length, including wings, which extend beyond abdominal tip. Its wing span is about 2 3/4 inches. The wing is very light.

The males of most species are fully winged, while many females have either reduced wings or no wings at all. The wing of a praying mantis is thickened and has many veins in a boxy pattern, with only small hooklike sturctures on the veins.♥

That varies as much as praying mantids do! Even in MY local area there are 4 different species, the smallest of which grows to about 4.5 - 6.5 cm, and the largest of which grows to between 7 & 9 cm.

Judging by the pictures in my daughter's insect book, the wing span is almost exactly the same as the length of the mantis from the tip of it's antennae to the end of it's abdomen. The female I have here now is 10 cm long including her antennae, so the span of the larger males would be about 9 or 10 cm. The smaller species would probably have a wing-span of around 5 or 6 cm. Females don't count as having a wing-span for me, because they spread their wings so rarely!
