My son is five weeks old & I have started putting a little cereal in his night time bottle he has settled down during the day as well as the night. I have five children and they have all had cereal early and they are all healthy my eldest is nine. In a few weeks I will be offering him a teaspoon of cereal on the spoon in the morning as I did with all my other children. My mother advised me to do this when I had my first child and I listened to her and I have had happy and content babies.
Listen to your mother she knows what she is talking about from experience.

Try him on a different formula. If his current formula contains lactose, try a soy formula. You may want to check with the pediatrician first. DO NOT put karo syrup in his formula. If you do that now he will be hooked on sweets all of his life and his teeth will probably be the first to go. You can start your baby on cereal no sooner than six months of age. Start with rice cereal at that time. Feed that for about a week and introduce new foods by themselves on a weekly basis until he eats everything.

talk to your pediatrician, I don't think they recommend the Karo syrup thing anymore because it has the same effects as honey and can cause botulism (look botulism up on webmd.com) as for cereal i would also ask the pediatric in because after all they know what is best for baby. how many times a day are you feeding him and how much at a time ? the pediatrician may just tell you to up his formula intake or try a different type of formula

You mom is right on target. Make the milk/cereal mixture thin. (I made the nipple hole a little larger so my babies could suck easily.) The white Karo syrup will keep him from becoming constipated. Keep an eye on his stool to determine if he needs Karo with each feeding.
My old family doctor told me to start them with rice baby cereal because it causes less allergies than others. I fed my babies like this and they were so much more satisfied than with formula alone and extremely healthy!
Good luck with your little one!

First, talk to your doctor. Moms don't always know best -- especially since the last time she had a baby was probably twenty or more years ago and things have changed.
Usually if a baby is not satisfied with just his milk, it's ok to add a little bit of cereal to his bottle.

no the baby is to little for cereal and you are not supposed to use karo syrup either at all for baby. you are not supposed to feed your baby cereal tell 6 months. my baby's peds doctor told me not to give my baby cereal tell 6 months. the girls answers above are right your mom probably hasnt had a baby for about 20 yrs back then they used anything on their baby now days doctors say differant things go with the baby's peds doctor not your mom. do rush baby on cereal. the baby can get bad allergies from it .

Do NOT do either one... he is way too young... and karo syrup???? NEVER!
Your baby should be on formula only, and he should not be constipated....
Don't change his formula either... wait to see what doctor says.
Please ask your pediatrician... don't do something stupid. This isn't a science experiment... don't try crazy old home remedies....
Call the doctor. It's not an emergency, but you definitely need his advice.

Gee, ain't it grand you come on a public forum where anyone can claim to be anything, a doctor, a mother, or hey even God himself to give you advise on your child's health and well being but in fact they are simply a pimply faced teen who hasn't seen the light of day for a week since he keeps locked up in his room, on the computer pretending to have all these answers.
With a question involving the health of your child, call the doctor!!!

I started all seven of my children on rice cereal when they first came home from the hospital. It did not cause either of them to have constipation. Not going against your mom but I do not give my babies Karo syrup. The reason why I gave cereal right away is because it's easy to digest and it help them sleep through the night.

Talk to your baby's doctor before changing the baby's diet. The doctor might need to change the formula that the baby's on.
