I know in my econ202 lecture class, there are over 60 enrolled, but any given day you'll only see maybe 20...when test day comes around, the whole lot is there (looks strange actually). The professor posts old tests online with the answers, but that's pretty much along the lines of cramming and has resulted in unfavorable grades by those that don't attend. You don't get to hear key things in class as opposed to just "looking" at old tests. And yes, I can believe that those that are paying are more likely to go, than the one's that their parents are paying.
I receive full grants and all expenses paid, but have never missed a nano-second of any class!

I only miss class when I'm sick.
Why other students miss class goes person to person. Some are lazy, some have chronic illness, and others just don't care. It really depends on the aptitude of the student, and their dedication.
Also, I have noticed a correlation between students who pay their tuition versus tstudents whose parents pay. I find those students who are paying themselves attend more classes then those who's parents pay.
Also, if a student enjoys the class or the major they are in, they attend class more often. However, if a student does not like what he or she does, then they might feel less motivated to go.
But like I said, it depends person to person.

Because in some classes attendance isn't required, and the teacher puts all their notes on line. In those cases what is the point in going. Now if a class is hard, or requires work, I make every session.

Just for fun, take an unofficial survey, and see who's missing class.
My guess is you'll find NO ONE who is paying for his own education misses class without a damn good reason.
Kids whose parents are footing the bill take it all for granted, and still have the idea they are "stressed out" (!).

college students have very busy lives and if class is not worth going to then they just don't go.
