Is it to protect their eyes. Do dark ones hide their eyes so defenders can't see where they are looking. I just don't fully understand the reason behind wearing them, esp. the clear ones. GO BEARS!

on your avatar your wearing sun glasses and you dont know the answer lol.........its simply because of the light....some wear it because its sunny and they want to wear it like sunglasses so for example if there a a skilled position like a wide receiver or defensive back they might wanna wear it to block the sun.....some wear it for the same reasons and medical conditions.....some just wear it to be cool lol.....some do wear it like you said so you cant see where there looking....another thing players wear is eye paint for the same reason because of the sun.......some im sure are wearing it to look good though......now some i dunno...if i was going to play football i probably would wear it to protect my eyes because i wear contacts...some might wear it for that reason too....the clear ones most likely block the sun out too but dont block your vision the way the darker ones might....but i heard when i was at a training camp that the really dark visors are not legal any more unless you have a medical condition because if you get a concussion or something then the trainers have to use a flash light to look into your eyes and with head injuries as you might know there not allowed to take off the helmet so they can prevent further injury which can be dangerous.....hope i answered your question

Using HIGH DEFINITION OPTICS® (HDO®) technology, Oakley football shields eliminate the distortion found in the industry’s first-generation polycarbonate visors. Oakley uses PLUTONITE®, a proprietary synthetic that sets a new standard for durability.
Whether it’s helmet-to-helmet collision, eye gouging or wind blow debris, PLUTONITE® offers the highest level of protection. But it’s not just the material that makes Oakley shields better. It’s the geometry.

So apparently it's to cut glare, and gouging fingers and debris such as turf and those rubber bits on the field turf fields.

Remember when football players just wore those black mascara, I mean eye patches above their cheeks? They looked much meaner than those face shields.

I am sure that there are lots of reasons but the one that cones to mind right away is so they will not take a finger to the eyes.
