It very likely the rechargeable battery on your motherboard. The time is stored in your BIOS and the rechargeable battery keeps the time ticking even tough the PC is unplugged or even if you remove the motherboard.
The battery is a flat coin like which should be easily removed. I would consider identifying it and finding a new one before replacing it.

U need a new battery, as your computer is only retaining time as long as it is plugged. The moment the computer is switched of its lacking a alternative source to power the internal clock mechanism consistently.

well he is right the CMOS is responsible to store the info on dates and times....
if you've not used the computer for a long time its battery must be almost dead by now..
why not simply replace the same o buy a new computer...
sounds expensive..
not for me..
do what i do..
