Since 8 is the LCM of the 3 fractions, why don't you multiply both sides by 8 to get rid of the fractions?

8(1/8x) + 8(3/4) = 8(5/2)
x + 6 = 20

So, x = 14.

That's a neat trick when you have fractions in an equation.

1/8x = 5/2 - 3/4 = (10-3)/4 = 7/4
(1/8)x = 7/4
x = 8*7/4 = 2*7 = 14

1/(8x) = 7/4
8x = 4/7
x = 4/(7*8) = 1/14

2006-10-29 18:34:29 · answer #5 · answered by Norm 3 · 0 0

(1/8)x + (3/4) = (5/2)
(1/8)x = (5/2) - (3/4)
(1/8)x = (10/4) - (3/4)
(1/8)x = 7/4
x = (7/4) / (1/8)
x = (7/4) * (8/1)
when you divide by a fraction you can multiply by the reciprocal
x = (7 * 8) / (4 * 1)
x = 56/4
x = 28/2
x = 14
