It's a reputable role in acting society.

Meaning, it looks good on the resume.

I think a Shakespearean role is the pinnacle of an actor's career. Today's cinema actors, because of the fast pace of films, have to work very little. Count the actual number of minutes an actor has to act in an average action movie - amazingly little.
So for an actor to take on Shakespeare, which is considered by far to be the best dramatist in the English-speaking world, is the ultimate challenge and a proof that they are the real deal: A truly accomplished actor.

Shakespeare is sort of a test for actors. Like the SAT test. It doesn't change, has almost universal appeal, and sets the standard for an actor's talent.
Because it doesn't change, actors only bring their talent to the role and good actors shine, while people who don't have talent or education can't pull it off.
Universal Appeal means that people know the roles. When someone says Ashton Kucher is playing Hamlet, it causes critics and Kutcher fans to form opinions before they even see him tank the roll. If he somehow managed to do well, it says something about his talent.
I hope this helps.

I do not believe it is a case of 'want'..really.
It would seem....one needs to be able to deliver 'well' in doing so...The actors true talents can be found, or fine tuned...Sir Lawrence Oliver...was they say?..the best, with Shakespear.

Which is the most difficult form of acting...to deliver it true to the task, put to that actor.
So its a matter of...can the actor...come up to this very high level of acting.
Plus, to be given a role using Shakespear...and be thought of to be able to carry such a role...is a huge compliment!
