The movie the Warriors was about the "Ten Thosand" who marched out of Persia long before Alexander. It was an epic (and truse) saga that became a cult movie of the 1970's.

Watch The Mighty Aphrodite by Woody Allen - Cassandra, a Greek chorus, and Tiresias the blind seer. About as much greek mythology as any modern setting could have.

"The Coen Brothers' film O Brother Where Art Thou? (2000) is loosely based on the Odyssey. However, they also admit to never having read the epic. George Clooney plays Ulysses Everett McGill, leading a group of escapees from a chain gang through an adventure in search of the proceeds of an armoured truck heist. On their voyage, the gang encounter—amongst other characters—a trio of sirens and a one eyed bible salesman."

Please, please don't take Hollywood's stories for real. They basically try to turn every character into Superman and Spiderman. Hercules is completely destroyed and Paris in Troy is demolished.
Try books, documentaries, perhaps, anything that will give you a realistic picture of what you are looking for.
A good book I'd recommend is written by Euripidis called Helen.
Find it in modern English or look it up in Wikipedia. That's an excellent start.
