How can I tell what kind of hard drive will work with my laptop?

These days pretty much anything the right size will work. In the old days, before they sorted out IDE interfaces, you were limited to a few discrete types. You probably need a 2.5" drive, try a reputable dealer like NewEgg.com assuming you are in the US.
