the theme? like only one theme? can't tell from this question if you haven't read the book and just need some kind of information on it; it's about the life of a country veterinarian. themes could be appreciating the beauty of life, kindness to all species, etc.

It is written by James Herriott who was a veterinarian and it tells of his true experiences. It is a wonderful book. Also read his "All Creatures Great and Small." You will like them if you like animals. There is a lot of humor in it as well. I may have misspelled the last name, so it could be Harriott but I don't think so. He is a British author.

I know of one book, by the veterinarian, James Herriot. Is this the book you are asking about?
Better start reading. There are lots of good stories in this book.
