No it's probably not a virus.
Your hard disk / hard drive ( same thing ) may have failed, or Windows has been corrupted somehow.
Norton isn't going to help unless you've already made a bootable rescue CD or DVD with it.
What happens when you switch the computer on?
Exactly how far does it get?
Do you eventually see a menu that has various choices like Safe Mode, Safe mode with networking, Last known good etc.?
If so, choose Safe mode and let Windows start.
Once you see your desktop just click Start and then shutdown / restart. There's a fair chance that everything will be normal after the restart.
If not, did you install any new program just before the problems?
If you did, start in Safe mode again and use Start > Control Panel > Add Remoev Programs and remove the program.
If this doesn't work, start in Safe mode again and use System restore to restore the computer to the state it was in on day x.
When using system restore, you can choose the day / time to restore to. Obviously choose a time a few days ago.
To access System Restore Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.
Or the Yes / No dialogue that appears during Safe Mode startup, read the message and click Yes to start system restore.

Ok this might work - i had a different problem but with enough similarities for me to think this method will work. Stick in your original xp cd - and boot from it. Run the recovery console once its booted. Type this without the quotation mark things: 'Fixboot' Now hit enter (this rebuilds the boot sector of your hard drive and should get it to boot to windows rather than the sp installation) take xp cd out and restart and get it to boot from your drive you have windows installed to. This should get you to at least be able to boot - then you can reinstall your service pack from there! If the above fails, then do what reply number 2 says! Editing again but if what number 2 says also fails then do what number 1 says! lol

When my PC does things it is not supposed to do I suspect viruses immmediately. The only solution is to re-install the operating system, I'm afraid. Remember also that no matter how good anti virus software is, some will get through. Keep away from illegal sites like piracy or music & films etc sites, or porn sites and most important DO NOT OPEN EMAILS unless you know and trust the sende 100%. Any email you do not trust DELETE it and do NOT open !!!!

Try hitting F8 when booting up to get into safe mode. If you get into safe mode then do a few virus scans. Do a few!
If you can't get into safe mode the do this.
Boot up with the Original windows CD in the hard drive. Options will come up for installation. Choose the "repair install" option and try that. If this does not work then call the OEM (manufacturer)

I don't know if this is a virus on not. Do you have a recovery disk? You might have to start it that way. Anything else, I don't know. You might have to take it to a computer technician and have him look at it.

It could be a virus or if programs clash and wont work with each other it can end up in system failure some programs even clash with windows if you not got a back up CD then you might have to get a technician in or phone your service provider they might be able to help. but some times give it a rest over night and in the morning it might work.

sounds like a virus or your hard drive has crashed. Maybe try you windows xp disk and use the recovery wizard. If you cant even boot to the bios then maybe a prob with the motherboard in which case it will need replacing.
Good luck

I had a similar problem with pne of my systems. My mate wiped it clean and reinstalled windows ep service pack one and its worked fine ever since. Even he could not trace the problem. Somethimes I could get it to start in safe mode but at other times even that would crash. So its still a mystery.

it sounds like there's a good chance u do have a virus.I would be taking it to a reputable pc shop and having it looked at, just in case by fiddling you're making the problem worse.
