Soot from a fuel oil furnace has been tracked onto my carpet. I tried regular carpet cleaner but it left a big black circle around where I cleaned.

Hi
I would recommend using a wet vac and slowly pour hot water on the spot and vacuum it up at the same time (this will open up the dye ports on the carpet fibre releasing the stain. and remove the residue from the carpet). If the stain is still visible than use a little carpet spotter on it or Dawn dishwashing liquid (2 or 3 drops into one cup of water) and repeat step 1. The stain may come back in a few days so you may have to do this a few times. Please DO NOT put anything on the carpet that was not made for carpet. At this point if the stain is still there please call a carpet cleaner. What I have suggested will not lock the stain in.

Have you tried oxy clean or some kind of de greaser? sometimes I mix clothes detergent and water and scrub the area and dab with a cloth to keep from spreading it. Then again i wash with oxy clean and then use some fabric softener with water to rinse it. Good luck.

believe it or not the best way to remove stains such as this is
a little water in a spray bottle and a shop vacuum. spray the area
then extract and repeat until clean.
