How do you service your own lawnmower that has been setting for at least four years? It's a push mower and I am a woman that knows nothing about servicing these. Can I service this myself w/out taking it somewhere?

It depends on how talented you are.

Has it been sitting inside or outside?

You'll need a new spark plug (not hard), and you'll have to make sure it's gapped properly (also not hard). You'll need to drain out any old gas and oil, and replace them. The blade may need sharpened (that's tougher, and you can hurt yourself or the blade if you don't know what you're doing).

If you're lucky, that'll be it.

However...you could need new points or a pull rope, and those aren't always easy.

Do you have the manual for it? Sometimes they tell you how to do the basic service.

Ok, I'll start the responses from the side of it being, push powered..by say, me. Every now and again i will take a dremel tool with a sanding/attatchment head and sharpen the blades (i just follow, as best i can) the allready existing edge to put a crispness to it , like. BEING CAREFULL about , the only real becarefull for these lawn mowers, when working with the blades makes sure they are allways secured stationary. so they wont turn on you, (Experienced that one a couple times, lol ouch.) thank god theres no "Gas" involved, ha ha Otherwise, sharpen, spray WD40 at the wheels and where they attatch to the blades, adjust the tension screws so my blades spin nicely when i push it, and cuts nicely. the tension screws are what allows the bottom plate of the mower to gently make contact with each blade as it goes around thus, cuts the grass at this point. And thats it. 3 things all easy im a 42 year old woman whos had to learn more than i wanted but was glad i did. (makes things alot easier). Best advice if it is Manually Powered, is just take it to the garage, back porch whatever, prop that baby up onto something and just start playing with it becoming familiar with what it does and how it does it. Peice of Cake.

I guess it all depends on how mechanically apt you are.Do you have the tools for the job?
Before doing anything though, unplug the spark plug wire from the plug and tip the mower on its side(opposite of gas side so it doesn't empty out into your yard). Then try turning the blade by hand.**CAUTION** Don't try this with the spark plug wire still connected to the plug or you will lose an appendage!!!It's possible to start mowers by accident this way...If the shaft rotates,it's worth a general maintenance fix. If it's frozen up, you may not have the skills to swap out lawnmower gearbox.

4 years is a long time....Go to Walmart and buy a new/ cheap one! Just remember to keep it stored from the weather and add some "Stabil" to it when not in use for a while. Stabil prevents the gas from gumming as it sets for a spell .....like all winter. Change the oil as per the instructions and it will last years!
