Rollers shouldn't leave marks unless you're not putting enough paint on the roller, or you need multiple coats.
Go to your local DIY store....Do It Yourself....they usually have people in the paint department who can give you some advice.

Assuming you are using a latex flat, or eggshell paint, use a small brush to paint the edges starting at the top corner of the room.Work from right to left if you are right handed, and vise versa if your left.Paint an area about two foot at a time.If useing latex paint, work in horizontal bands.(brush markes are less likley to show this way)Choose a roller about nine inches long.If your painting a smooth surface,a short pile synthetic roller is what you'd select. This would also be the right roller if using satin or gloss paint.Gentley roll your paint roller into the paint, which has been poured into rollertray, and roll across the ribbed section of the tray.Start by painting a big "W" onto the section tou are working, keeping the roller against the wall. Than run your roller horizontaly across the w.(a tip from Glidden Paint Co.) Remember not to lift your roller off in the middle of your wall. Need more advice, I'd be glad to help you.

If you "over roll" the roller is going to absorb the pain you just applied to the wall leaveing "roller marks" You need to have enough paint on the roller but not too much that paint beads start forming on the wall. But you can ask anyone in the paint section of your local hardware store different techniques to apply textures and stuff.

Never use a brush to paint walls. Just make sure you use a quality paint and a good quality roller. Be prepared to paint 2 coats for a nice finish.

It sound like what you need to do is take a home repair workshop. These are usually offered through your community college as evening courses.Or you could get a handyman repair book that covers the whole house for maintenance and upkeep.Good luck and have fun learning new skills.
