I puzzle over this watching my dog circle around, and adjust, and readjust, until he finds just the right spot and pose.

Has anyone ever figured out what exactly makes a dog choose his target?

I do seriously find this puzzling. :)

well any area that he is used to going in.. i take my dog out for walks and he only poops in the corner of my front yard that he's been pooping in ever since i got him and nowhere else unless its an emergency.

i would think hes finding a spot that looks like it needs some poop on it, you know somewhere where the scent isn't strong enough and he needs to renew it

My dog likes a little privacy, when she can find it. She'll go to the far side of the house or behind the compost bin, or to the edge of the yard by the bushes. When we are walking, she likes to get as close to the road as possible sometimes, I dont know why!

If you can figure this out, let me know! My dog will spend forever, circling the same area before finally pooping in the spot he started in...makes me so mad! I figure, they're just goofy animals.

I don't know... My dog sniffs around forever and then always ends up pooping in the same area. However, if the grass is wet, she won't go at all. What a brat.

Haha, not with my dog. I'll take him for a walk sometimes and he'll just start crapping while he's walking. He's a little weirdo.

Are you planning to poop w/ him?
Dog's just do that, he's waiting for the urge!

soft grass or other material, doesn't have any markings left by other dogs.
