No one can really know what goes on in their wonderful heads, but after years of having pets and saying good by to many of them under different circumstances, I have some thoughts on this. Some have ailments that cause confusion and like people with Alzhiemers may wander off and get lost. Too sad because they may spend time cold, hungery, and lonely. Others may be made uncomfortable by the fuss if you keep bothering them. They may be looking for some rest in a quiet spot. They only know how tired they are. Mentally sharp ones in pain may actually become clingy as they hope you will fix it for them just like you always do. Hope this helps.

Its natures way, i dont really have a concrete answer, but my personal opinion is that in their makeup, they have a built in intuition that tells them when its time to go........its we humans who try to prolong their lives because we love them and hate to have them die, especially if they've been a member of the family for many years.......we've had to go thru it our beloved peke two summers ago, and were heartbroken for quite a while, but finally added another member to our family, Honey Bun isnt a replacement for Fluffy but a loving addition to our family, and we love her a lot. Remember that all of us have a certain time to be on this earth, and we have to enjoy it to the best of our ability and leave it to God to help us each step of the way. S. T. from oHIo

They love you and they want to spare you the pain.

Bones, my beloved cat of 17 years, went behind the living room sofa to die in his sleep. He was an indoor cat. I'm glad he didn't die on my bed, which was his.

maybe they don't want to hurt their owners by the owner having to watch the animal die ...but maybe the owners don't treat them right..
