This is a very personal thing. Hormone treatments have side effects. The effects might be negligible or severe. That is just a risk of any medication. Spermicide is an irritant. A little isn't too bad. If you have sex several times a day for several days in a row, you will be irritated by the spermicide. If you or your partner are allergic to spermicide, that compounds the situation. Spermicide is a chemical barrier method. Physical barrier methods exist as well. The cervical cap, diaphragm, female condom, sponge, and the male condom are all examples of a physical barrier. The female and male condoms are the only ones which can be used without spermicide. Then you have to consider the material and lubrication. Some are sensitive to latex. Some are sensitive to polyeurethane. There are no latex female condoms. Male condoms come in three materials. Two have already been mentioned. The third is also called a natural or animal membrane condom. It is usually made of a bladder or similar membrane from an animal such as a sheep though it could be another animal. Again consider lubrication. The lubricant has to be compatible with the material. Latex is oil soluble. You cannot use oil based lubricants with any latex. Polyurethane allows the use of oil based lubricants as well as water based ones.
Personally, I think you just have to know what's out there and try something after learning about them. Male condoms are about as good as you get. The are simple, easy to use, and cheap. The exception is the animal membrane condom. They are not cheap and do not protect against STD's.
There is also an IUD which is placed in a woman's uterus. In some cases there is scar tissue resulting from their use. Lastly there is permanent sterilization. The reproductive organs are damaged in such a way that pregnancy cannot occur. The damage can be to the tubes or to more of the organs. It might involve cutting and tieing or cutting and burning of the tubes.
I still think that condoms are the cheapest and most reliable for the money. They are immediately reversible as in not permanent. If you change your mind, you can remove them easily at any time. Other methods might take hours, months, or years to reverse. As I said earlier, some are permanent.

I have tried a lot of different methods. I am currently pregnant so I am obviously not on anything but before I became pregnant I was on Ortho-Evra for about 2 years. That is the patch. Basically the side effects are the same as the pill but I didn't experience any. I really liked only having to remember to change it once a week instead of taking a pill every day.

I haven't had any problems while on the pill, and taking it every day isn't much of a hassle. The depo shot is good too, but if you do decide to have kids you cna't get off it right away, you would have to wait till the end of the 3 months. i just trust the pills more.

Microgynon (the pill) and Marvelon (the other pill) worked for 12 years with no problems for my ex., it certainly had no detrimental effect on her fertility (have daughter as proof). Other than that, the worlds easiest to use barrier method.... The Condom.

(or have kids.... and you'll never get another moment to yourself, let alone time to make love)

the ring, its small, and u only need 1 a month. depo can have some serious side effects, including headaches and weight gain are the most popular, although I didn't have many. If u have a reaction to it, it may last the whole three months

I was on the pill for 6.5 years without any problems at all, no weight gain, no headaches, no unwanted pregnancies. I quit it because I wanted to have a baby and a month and a half after I quit it got pregnant. After this baby I am going back to it again.

i had terrible side affects with the pill (many different types tried)
I was on the depo for 4 years worked a treat but from coming off it to conceiving my baby it took 2 1/2 years which in my opinion is a side affect...

Condoms would be most affective

I had a coil for 5 years: once put in and forget any trouble.Periods was heavy but that's all. Didn't tried pill because don't like chemicals in my body and can forget about pill easily. And my older son a bit noisy... With condoms had bad experience: end up with after pill.... horrible

depo, the only side effect i have had with it is no more time of the months plus one jab every three months and that's it, no need to remember to take tablets at the same time everyday.
