I've always been fascinated with how people live in England. Here in America, everything seems more rough-and-tumble. England seems more civilized, but kinda strange. What's life like in England? I would like to know about life in London versus life in smaller towns.

Thank you! :-)

I'm an American who lived in southeastern England (Chatham, Kent) from 1995 to 1997. It is quite different from what is portrayed in films and BBC/ITV television series.
The positives: If you like history, it is all around you everywhere you go in Britain. Although people there, upon first meeting you, will seem rather withdrawn and reserved, once you get to know them they are the best of friends. The food is fantastic, whether it's English regional or ethnic. It's easy to get around there, because almost everyone speaks English. ;)
The negatives: Petty crime is epidemic - there is little respect for the rule of law, especially among young people; you must guard your possessions much more closely than is necessary in the US. It's much more crowded than the US. Petrol is about £1.00/litre, or over $7.00/gallon.
In spite of the negatives, I would be happy to go back to live there for a while.

Fantastic, London is great if you like really busy towns with lots to do, you name it London has it. Smaller towns are less hectic I guess. England also has this rough and tumble aspect although how bad you would have to judge for yourself as it is perspective really.

Don't get all dewy eyed and nostalgic. There are plenty of problems with poor quality schools, delinquents, drugs and alcohol. Feral children, gand fights and stabbings are becoming more frequent. The difference between London and smaller towns is not so great.

I say - go there! That's the best way to experience it. No matter what anyone here can tell you, the most logical (and most fun) way to find out the answer, is to figure it out for yourself. England's an amazing place, you really have to go there yourself to know what it's like!
