Depends. Much of the role thing is a statement like punk or goth or whatever, and sometimes a hold over from the 50s when life was just safer that way. Sometimes, tho, the butch thing is an integral gender trait, in which case, femme is never going to feel real. (Lol, I know straight women who dress and act nearly as butch as any lesbian I know). Personally, I like my jeans and tees and femme suits and stylin' clothes. At the same time, I'm not comfortable in ultra butch or ultra fem clothes - pretty much like 80% of the female population, no?

Its hard to say. But it depends on the persons personality and their role. The butch has more of a aggressive role. Masculine role as well. I mean it lies deeper than the clothing. Its about how they act. For instance I'm a femme. AND I LOVE STUDS/BUTCH women. I love the thought of having someone wanting to protect me and treat me like a queen. Of course it goes both ways just different levels.

As a butch woman myself, I know it wouldnt be possible for me to convert to femme.
Alot of people think butch is wearing baggy jeans, having short hair and things like that.
Its about wanting protect and cherish your femme. There is no way for a butch to stop doing what comes naturally to her.
I could never see myself wanting to put on makeup.

Gay people come in as many shapes, styles and sizes as straight people. When I was new to the gay community you had to "do roles". You were either butch or femme. Nowadays we are more accepting of each other and don't have to play these silly games to fit in. That's called progress I think. I see women as more androgynous with no clear lines drawn in this day and age. We are more accepting of our differences, too. It's nice to be human beings living, loving, and learning as a diverse group and being proud of our accomplishments in the world without the added burden of stereotyping people.

I don't see why not. The butch/femme thing is so silly to me. Its just a matter of clothing and hairstyle...theres no sexual role, profession, childcare, or other correlation. I think its a leftover relic from the 1950s gay scene, and we should dispense with the terminology alltogether.
