Device manager says that windows loaded the driver but cannot find the hardware. I uninstalled them, rebooted and windows recognizes that there's new "hardware". I checked the IDE cables and the jumbers (dvd is set as master, cd-rw as slave) and even replaced the ribbon cable. BIOS recognizes both devices and recognizes the set up as well (dvd master, cd-rw slave). Sony cd-rw crx175E and sony dvd-rom DDU1621. Please advise, I'm losing my mind!!!

Update:
I tried using a brand new cd-rw and the same problem occurs. The device manager knows that there's something in there, in fact, it displays the correct name for the device. But, the freaking yellow exclamation point is still there telling me that the drivers were installed but cannot the find the hardware. I also tried assigning it to the primary IDE as a slave of the hard drive. Once again, BIOS detected it correctly yet XP insists that there's a problem. Do you all think this is a motherboard problem?

look at the documentation for your cd & dvd drive on how to install them (jumper settings should be included in there as well). then try reinstalling the software for your cd & dvd drives. as a last resort, you can always call the company's tech support for your cd & dvd drives.

Recheck the connections, I admit, I've not plugged the power into the drives and wondered, why aren't the drives seen in "My Computer"?? Plug the power in knucklehead (I said to myself)!! So, check the connections once again. Check the jumper settings again also. The way it's sounding now is the hardware is no good. Did you update the "firmware" on these drives? I hope not, that could void the warranty on them if you did. How did you uninstall the drives if they weren't seen in the device manager? Try disconnecting the drives and start the computer up then see if the computer sees new hardware. Reboot, check the BIOS. Then, unplug it from the wall and wait a few minutes, plug the drives back in and see what happens. That's the best I can do for you right now. If that doesn't work, think about some new drives. Or, RMA to Sony for new ones, if their under warranty.

P.S. Could be, the IDEs could be the cause. Did you have a power surge, or electrical problem recently? The "southbridge" chip might be damaged, but there is no way to test that yourself. The mobo will have to be RMAed to be examined by the manufacturer. They have multi-million dollar machines to diagnose mobo problems.

it really is an undemanding one your old DVD ROM pressure would in basic terms study +R/+RW or neither + - formats in basic terms as an older abode DVD participant. i'm shocked you nonetheless stumbled on a unmarried format burner particularly than a twin format +R/RW -R/RW which will write twin layer DVDs in case your burner is actual a twin format, burn a +R your ROM would study it, if not time to improve your older pressure

If your computer is not working properly when it is switched on, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.

first problem is that they are SONY units.

You might try putting them on SEPARATE IDE channels.
(Many systems will copy disk to disk faster if they are on separate channels.)

Possibly the "firmware", (software in the drive itself) needs updating.

Suggest you check with Sony tech support, IF YOU can EVER reach them, or with MS tech support
