i am trying to record music into my laptop from vinyl

If it has a mono socket then it means that the on-board sound in the lap top can only handle mono sound. However you can combine both tracks into a single mono plug but you will not be able to play back in stereo. Go to a local Maplins shop or similar for an adaptor. However, it might be better to play your vinyl records into a PC loaded with an audio cleaning programme to remove scratches, clicks etc and then burn onto a CD.

Well if you need better sound input you can either get a PCMCIA sound card, or if you have a firewire port, you can get a firewire sound device.

u have to make recording through the "line in" jack, if u have ... it depends on ur sound card

it ain't gonna work! why not download the music you require from limewire or such like?
